Golf Grip Tips to Fix Golf Hook and Golf Slice Shots

As we have learnt in our previous article, a major issue most golfers will encounter from time to time will be the dreaded hook and slice shots. Both can be fixed by the diligent application of good technique and practice.

Golf Grip Tips To Fix A Golf Hook Shot

In diagnosing the grip that has produced a hook, remember that only two knuckles of the left hand should be in view. If three or even four appear, it is now a “strong” grip. Also, look at the Vs between the knuckle and thumb on both hands; these should point at the right ear and shoulder, but not any further to the right. Try and fix the hook by changing the grip to a “weak” grip. This is done by turning the hands slightly counter-clockwise on the grip. Also, grip pressure may be a problem; if it is too loose, then at impact the club releases too early. One thing to keep in mind is that changes should not be substantial; over compensating can cause the other dreaded problem—the slice.

Golf Grip Tips To Fix A Golf Slice Shot

Although many things can cause a slice, the usual offender is the grip. Interestingly, the grip does not particularly affect the swing, but it does clearly direct where the clubface is looking at point of impact. If the hands are turned too far to the left on the grip, the face of the club will be looking right at impact. So, check the stance. The clubface should be square to the target. Look down and check that at least two knuckles on the left are showing; if three of even four are showing, it is apparent that it isn’t the grip that is contributing to the slice. Also, look at the Vs between the knuckle and thumb on both hands; they should point up near the right shoulder. There are additional causes of the slice which can be discussed at a later point.

Implementing Golf Grip Tips

Understanding and reviewing the basics of a good golf grip can go a long way in correcting the ugly twins, hook and slice. Once the diagnostics have been applied, it is a good bet that both practice at the range and enjoying the game on the course will be enhanced. Then, go out and enjoy this wonderful old sport with all its current and future improvements and implement these golf grip tips.

Golf Grip Tips – Definition of Golf Hook and Golf Slice Shots

Once the golf beginner has applied some basic golf grip tips and learns that the grip should be light, mostly across the fingers and that the left and right hand must work together as a team, he or she is then ready for the driving range and practice, practice, practice.

As the beginner golfer progresses through the practice routine, there is however a sad discovery: alas not all swings produce straight shots!  With this realization the beginner golfer receives a most unhappy introduction to the bane of all golfers seeking improvement in their game – welcome to the land of the hook and the golf slice shot!

Definition of a Golf Hook shot

For most golfers, those who are right handed, a hook veers sharply to the left of the target line. It happens when the club face is slightly closed at impact which causes the ball to spin counter-clockwise.

Definition of a Golf Slice Shot

Again, for the right handed, a slice is a ball that starts out to the left of the target line, but then bends back to the right of the target, spinning in a clockwise direction. Both of these errant shots can often be traced to the grip.

In the next article we’ll discuss golf grips tips to help fix the hook and golf slice shots.

Golf Grip Tips for Committed New Relationships

Golf grip tips are called for when the novice begins his or her romance with the game – unfortunately, it can also be where said beginner starts on the road to divorce from same.

A proper grip places the club face in the correct position for impact; then, the swing or the body’s rotation generates the power. So, just as in a human love affair, there is teamwork; the body and the club must work together. One of the first ingredients in this budding romance is wrist action. Here is a power source which can be dramatically impeded by gripping the club with more palm than necessary. Another golf grip tips element to be considered are the fingers; if the club rests across the fingers and not so much in the palm, the amount of wrist hinge is increased. This produces more feel which gives rise to longer shots. And maybe the most important thing for this new team to have is cooperation between the top hand and the bottom hand: the top hand will likely be the left hand for right handed players, and the bottom hand the right. Sounds wrong, but then so do lots of things in golf. Let’s look.

Assuming that our novice is right handed, keeping the club face square, lay the grip just below the second joint of the index finger at an angle down to the first joint of the smallest finger. This insures that the club is held more in the fingers and not on the palm. Remember, we are working with the top hand of the grip which is the left hand. Now, place the left thumb toward the back of the shaft of the club. Looking down at the grip, the golfer should see the knuckles of the index and middle finger as well as the “V” caused by the thumb and forefinger. That “V” should be pointing backward at the golfer’s right shoulder.

The bottom hand or the right hand for most folks is the trailing hand. It must be placed to strike a potent blow at impact without overwhelming the top hand. Another partnership is required here with the hands performing their fair share in the grip. The grip of the trailing hand must set the last joint of the index finger directly under the shaft covering the top hand thumb. Another “V” is formed by the thumb and forefinger of the trailing hand (remember, for most of us this is the right hand), and it should be pointing back to the ear and shoulder. These two “Vs” should be parallel.

There are many other golf grip tips to be considered when one gets past the beginner stage. For example, there is the overlapping grip as well as the interlocking grip not to mention the ten-finger or baseball grip, but these are all future relationships. For now, our novice should focus on the connection to the hands which must work together as a single unit. Wonderful game which should be played to be enjoyed!
